Diplomat Cigar Robusto Maduro
5x50
Filler – Unk, Binder – Unk, Wrapper – Conn Broadleaf

I picked this cigar up for $6.50 at the shop where they are rolled in the window on Seventh Street in downtown Los Angeles. The cigar had a dark golden brown wrapper that showed tiny tooth scattered uniformly over the oily surface and some medium sized veins. There was slight puckering at the seams of the roll, and a single layer cap that seemed raggedly cut and just flopped over the head of the cigar. The stick was soft and springy as one would expect from a freshly rolled product, and had an under-filled foot that collapsed to a flat chisel point. The blend had the unmistakable scent of freshly rolled tobacco, and although the pre-light draw was decent there was very little flavor.

The cigar was quick to take to the match and was soon offering sweet billows of mild smoke. The flavor was light and smooth, laced with wildflowers and mild cedar. Rolling the smoke around my mouth produced a sweet sensation followed by a finish that was a pleasant and subtle shadow of the smoke. A nice blend of tobacco exhibits the characteristics of a good Dominican core with notes of Nicaraguan and Indonesian spice fluttering in and out. The medium gray ash had some loose petals blossoming outward from the foot, but stayed put and tapped cleanly to reveal a nicely formed cone. The burn was straight and trouble free.

The flavor of the blend slowly built in strength and complexity as layers of velvety honeyed herbs and whispers of chalk and woody sap danced in from the wings. A hot mocha latte seemed to almost overpower the nuanced flavors yet at the same time complemented the smooth core. There was never a hint of bite to the blend, and the room note had a pleasant floral aroma that tickled the nose. The lyrical melding of flavors created a quiet symphony, delightfully subtle.

This was a very refreshing change from the usual boutique cigar. It offered true character in a light cigar best enjoyed early in the day. Recommended.
