Henry Clay Brevas Finas 48x6.5

Three or four years ago, a friend of mine gifted me one of the Cigar Lover's Diary Churchill samplers from Mike's Cigars.

As I typically don't have time for such long cigars, I rarely smoke them.

Today, in anticipation of smoking something much finer later this evening, I decided to grab one of these churchills from the sampler, the Henry Clay Brevas Finas.

I can remember smoking a Henry Clay Brevas back in the mid-1990's while sitting in front of the now-defunct Romeo y Julieta on PCH in Seal Beach, Ca. At the time, I recall thinking that it was a pretty strong-flavored, pungent cigar. I think that was the last time I had one; I was soon making semi-regular trips down to Rudy Rawman's TJ store, and I began smoking cigars from another country which will remain nameless in this review.

Fast-forward to this morning.

A beautiful day here in Southern California: high 70's, a clear blue sky. The wife and I decided to walk over to the park with the kids to let them burn some energy on the playground equipment.

I was looking through my desktops in search of a Horsepower cigar I'd been gifted. I couldn't find it quickly enough, so I decided to go with the Henry Clay.

The cigar had a nice maduro wrapper and once I clipped it, an easy draw.

The flavor, upon lighting, was what I would describe as a typical Dominican taste. It was on the mild side, and smelled very good, but I was not exactly blown away by the flavor. About 2/3 of the way through, it developed what I regard as the classic Dominican taste: slightly astringent and sour.

I've kept this cigar in the original box, cello on, ever since I got it, so I can't say what the effective age really is.

The construction was great... the cigar burned perfectly, with no touch-up required. The ash was dark grey on the outside but much lighter on the inside, and it broke in a perfect cone shape each time.

Overall, this cigar seemed average to me. If the flavor could match the construction and appearance, this cigar would be outstanding. But the flavor was too mild for my palate. I'm not an expert, but I would love to see the blend of this cigar spiced up a bit, perhaps with tobacco from outside the DR.
