Hight Cigar Co. Vintage Maduro Torpedo
CW member Chip Hight (pronounced "height") owns a small cigar shop in The Heights district on Houston's north side. He was running a Christmas special, so I picked up a few of his vintage maduros. They smelled really nice, so I decided to try one right away.
Chip has his vintage maduro line produced from aged Nicaraguan filler, with a 5-year old Nicaraguan maduro wrapper. Appearance: Box-pressed torpedo, somewhat rustic, with a lightly veined maduro wrapper. Pre-light: Draw a bit more open than I prefer, but the flavors were nice - pepper and spice prominent. Obviously uses a good quantity of ligero in the filler, because there's almost a little sting on the tongue. Flavors: Black pepper and leather, with a toasty tobacco core. Medium-bodied, consistent throughout. Began with a faint harshness at the edge, but that quickly disappeared; slow smoking was rewarded with a smooth impression overall. Burn: Dense smoke, even burn, requiring only minor touch-ups twice. Dark gray/black mottled ash. Overall: I burned this one down to a 1" nub, and enjoyed it quite a bit, especially the middle third. I picked these up because I believe in supporting local cigar businesses, but was pleasantly surprised. Fort the money Chip asks for these, they're quite a good value, IMO. Recommended.
