I would have to say definately maybe, as far as intelligent punk rock i would say yes, as far as sound it would have to be a toss up between Bad Religion, discharge and the Dead Kennedy's.
Yeah i know punks not fashionable, but screw the people who say whats cool!!!!

Sorry decasere, I would go with X (although I wouldn't necessarily call them punk, that seems to be how they're classified by the mainstream).
I'm probably biased because X is my favorite band, and IMO the best band of any genre to come out of Los Angeles.

I guess for me the Dead Kennedys edge them out.

IMO, Bad Religion wasn't even that great before Tesco Vee left to form the Meatmen.
The best? English, the Sex Pistols. American, Dead Kennedys or Butthole Surfers.

Bad Religion?
Misfits/Samhain Big Black/Rapeman/Shellac Naked Raygun Surfers, definitely Circle Jerks back in the day. Discharge, good stuff. I gotta go pre-Henry Black Flag overall probably.

I will say this for Graffin; there aren't many bands that can get away with using words like ubiquitous, altruistically, and dichotomy in their lyrics. That being said, I'm with JustKevin, gimme X (or maybe The Minutemen). X's first FOUR albums are ALL landmarks in punk's recorded history. Behind X and The Minutemen, throw in Minor Threat/ Fugazi, The Flag, Bad Brains, and the DK's. As for British Punk I'd take the first 3 Clash albums. The Pistols were good, but it's too bad they imploded after only 2 albums. And had Malcolm McLaren not fired Glen Matlock in favor of the technically inept but much more "entertaining" Sid Vicious, they'd probably be long forgotten by now.
