My ice box conversion

I got this today

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i1...mentaspx-3.jpg

Just happened on it on Craigslist. Paid $400. I think I got a good deal

Right away I went to removing the tin. However, when I started gutting it I soon found out that the insulation board had a bit of mold or mildew at one point. I decided I was going to have to remove it. This is the door but the floors and the walls were quite bad.

Behind the insulation baord was cork. I'm sure at one point it was solid sheets. But with beling as old as it was it was just crumbled and dust. So off it went. The only places it was still intact was the doors.

This was all the tin I removed. It took about three hours to remove the tin and all the cork. Good thing I had a huge shop-vac.

This is what it looks like now. Notice the black paper this is some sort of water barrier? between the cork and the outside wood.

This is ThomKm's that I am trying to get mine to look like one day.

I have a lot of work ahead. Next week I will get some insulation.

What kind should I get?

I also think I will get some type of Tyvec water wrap to put inside it to create a air tight seal as much as I can. Over that I will put the insulation and the create a plywood shell over which I will put my Spanish cedar.

I will also need to get some type of humification device and then I need something to keep it at the right temp since I'm in Texas.

Any suggestion and help from others that have done something like this? I have also looked at MTMouse conversion as well.

I got my work cut our for me. I will keep it updated.

Thanks!

That's a great looking icebox - nice score!

They make sheet styrofoam insulation that comes with an integral vapor barrier and water-tight tape for the seams; that's what I'd suggest for your application. To complete the build, you'll want to add:

- Fans. Radio Shack sells 110v computer fans that run forever and don't require a transformer. They're around $20 each.

- Humidification. From what I've read, I'd probably go with one of the "set & forget" active humidifiers, but I'll have to leave it to others to suggest specific brands.

- Cooling. That's going to be a challenge. A thermoelectric unit is an obvious choice, though they're less efficient than compression cycle systems. If you Google "thermoelectric coolers," you'll find lots of options and information.

Good luck with your project!

This would make a really nice article for the CW magazine.

I was at home depot several times today. First I went it search of some Tyvec and some insulation board and some other items to start sanding and removing and cleaning the hardware. I decided this was the way I wanted to go as there were some slight cosmetic issues that bugged me. I found some Owen Corning insulation board with some sort of plastic barrier attached to it. I also found some Tyvec. Man, that stuff is expensive. It was $68 for a 100 ft roll. I decided to go another route. Then on the way home I had a brilliant idea. A certain mail carrier has Tyvec shipping bags and they are free. Shhh. we won't tell anyone. I removed all the hardware and cleaned it today and sanding the whole box. My sander went out in the middle thus I had to go back to HD.

Very cool! I love antique furniture converted for cigar storage. This 20's/30's era fridge had been sitting in a friend's grandma's backyard for years before I took it off her hands.

Here is what it looked like when I got it:

Here it is after some TLC:
