NFL puts damper on Vegas Super Bowl party

Big screen TV's are causing a problem for a Las Vegas casino planning a Super Bowl party.

The NFL has sent a letter to the Palms Hotel Casino over an advertisement.

The Palms planned a super-sized party for Super Bowl Sunday, with the game to be shown on theater-sized big screens. But the NFL is barring the casino from showing the game on the big screens.

Jim Hughes is the General Manager of the Palms Hotel. He says it is all about copyright laws. "Copyright laws that the National Football League is quoting allows us to show it on big screen TV's up to 55 inches in diagonal. However, forbids showing it on any kind of a screen larger than that or any kind of commercial screen."

More than 600 tickets had been sold for the Palms Super Bowl party. The hotel is now refunding the money and offering a free Super Bowl party to those who had tickets, with the game on 130 regular-sized screens.

That sucks. I don't see how it would make any difference. There are places all over the world that will be making money while showing the superbowl in their establishment.

isn't the Palms Casino/Resort owned by the Maloof Bros? The same Family that owns the NBA franchise and CANNOT have any NBA GAMES wagered on in their Sportsbook????????

I'd like to know more about the legal issues, but IMHO, this is BULLSHIT!!!!! Television rights are sold, contracts written. Are you telling me that the end user display is covered in a contract and copy right arrangement? C'mon!!! Are we worried that the stadium isn't sold out? Has the network not paid the broadcast bill? This is absurd...but I'm willing to be convinced otherwise...NOT.

I know I'm in the minority here but the NFL has every right to do what they're doing. They didn't just decide at the last minute to change the rules and limit screen size. The Palms knew what they were doing was against copyright laws and tried it anyway.

Anyone and everyone can have a Superbowl party that's free. Sell all the beer, booze and food you want. You just can't show it on a theatre screen and sell tickets. That's profiting and not paying the broadcast fees that the network shelled out to air the game.

I totally agree, I just think the NFL should have settled for a fee rather than call the whole thing off.

The downside it, I heard Paris Hilton was going to perform for the half time entertainment.
