Briars or Meerschaums
Which do you prefer?
I used to smoke a lot of meerschaum pipes but got away from them in favor of briars. I haven't smoked a meers for a long time until this morning. It just didn't do anything for me. I much prefer a good briar. There just seems to be a better flavor and a good nuttiness from the briars that I don't get from the others. The meers do smoke drier. Also, you have to be more careful smoking a meers not to bang it or get it dirty. I didn't mention corn cobs or other woods. I guess those need to be considered also. What are your choices?

I prefer briar. I really like the look of briar. The shape is important. Some shapes take the heat better. Other shapes are more comfortable to hold. Some shapes make it easier to lay the pipe down on a table. My favorite thing about briar is the flame grain pattern. Love that look. You just can't get that with a
meer. I recently started using morta pipes. These pipes are very hard and can take the heat. All the oils and tannins normally found in briars have been washed out of the morta wood over time so there's no odd flavors during the break in period. I like cobs because they are cheap. Mississippi Meerschaum has the best quality cob pipes. They smoke well also.

I had a really nice Mearschaum many many years ago and it was a good smoker from what I remember. Though I wasn't smoking tobacco out of it, it was let's say a special blend

I'm with Mike, looking at this new briar pipe from Savinelli, just can't compare the natural beauty of the grain. Wish I could afford something like this.
