Chivas: The Century of Malts
I found a dusty old bottle in the back of the local store a few months back. I read Jazz's comments as well as some on-line reviews and just forgot about it. I saw it again Saturday and figured there weren't many hanging around anymore so I picked it up.
The Century of Malts is an out-of-production blend that was created by Chivas with 100 single malts. There's a little booklet in the canister that shows all 100 distilleries with a little blurb about each one. I was worried that it was purely a gimmick whisky, but in the many reviews I read, the tasters were pleasantly surprised and said it lived up to the hype. Michael Jackson (no glove) gave it a 9 out of 10 and one of the Malt Maniacs said it was the best vatted malt he had ever tasted. I have not been able to find an age statement of the whiskies in it, nor proof that it is in fact a vatted malt. One report said there WERE grain spirits in it, which would disqualify it as a vatted malt. Doug, do you if there is an age statement on the malts used or if this is a vatted malt or a blend? (Not that it matters, just curious.) Haven't sampled it yet. I'm waiting to lose this head cold so I can try this with my tatsebuds intact. Does anybody else have any experience with this one? |
