Question: Briars vs. Meerschaums, and Tobacco?
I currently have two briar pipes and a meerschaum, and another meerschaum being shipped to me this week. My two questions for you guys are about smoking different tobaccos in the same pipe:
1.) In general, do you smoke only one or two blends of tobacco in a briar pipe, or doesn't it matter? 2.) How about Meerschaums? Can you smoke different blends in the same meerschaum or should you just stick to one blend per pipe? So far I've only been smoking my briars with one blend per pipe and was wondering if I should keep doing this or if I could try other blends in the pipe. Thanks |

I've got 6 pipes that I smoke my everyday blend in to allow me to rotate and then I've got 2 or 3 small pipes that I use for trying new stuff once in a blue moon. A lot depends on how much you smoke and whether or not it's an aromatic tobacco. Aromatics will build cake faster and leave the distinctive aftertaste in the pipe. The more you smoke, the more the flavors from different blends will build in the cake which in my opinion will alter the taste of all the tobacco's.
I would keep the aromatics away from the meer. You won't see as much cake build up in a meer since it's so pourus, stuff just soaks into the meer. If you really want to smoke aromatics in a meer, definately smoke one blend per pipe. |

I ususally try to keep my briars to a certain type of blend. Larger bowls for english and smaller bowls for virginias. Thats just my preference. However, after smoking english blends in a pipe and then you try smoking a virginia in it you can taste it. Actually I prefer to keep aromatics with Meers because the flavor will stay with a briar more unless you want to dedicate a briar to an aromatic.
I prefer to smoke meers because they smoke drier and I can smoke a variety of tobaccos in them. In a meer you dont want to build up cake so I take a papertowel and twist it in the bowl when Im done to clean it out. Last thing is that I dont like to smoke goopy aromatics. I like light aromatics that wont leave all that gunk on my bowl. My favorites are: H&H Egg Nog, C&D Autumn Evening, and McClleland Captain Cool. Good Luck and have fun.
