For a first pipe

Let me start by saying that I am really new to pipes. With that said is it possible to buy a nice pipe (maybe a second) for around 10.00? I'm not talking about a Dr. Garbo but a nice pipe.

Even in the pipe world , the old adage applies ... "You get what you pay for." Limiting yourself to $10 can usually get you a nice new corncob pipe, a questionable basket pipe or Dr. Grabow from your local tobacco shop or possibly a decent estate (used) pipe from Ebay.

However, if you will expand your price to $20, a better world opens up. If you go to the following website :

Iwan Ries

and look under the Velani Silver category, you will find some nice pipes. I have had one of these for a few years now ( similiar to the one on the bottom) and can honestly say that it's been a good smoking pipe ... and good looking too. The only drawback is that it does not pass a pipe cleaner easily. I have fixed this somewhat with a small curved filing tool.

There are a couple of other brands there with a similiar price, but I have no personal experience that I can report.

Good Luck!
