Coolerdor and mold

Okay, admittedly, I haven't been opening my coolerdor enough to let it breathe. Tonight I discovered mold growing on the wood I had placed inside. Worse, there is a small amount of mold on my Heartfelt beads. The few cigars that were in the coolerdor are not visibly moldy.

Having admitted that sin, what can I do to get the mold off of the beads? They are not that old and I've got cigars that need to be stored. I am going to dump/replace the wood.

Can I just nuke the beads to kill the mold?

Prolly best to just replace the beads.

More importantly - you gotta determine WHY you have mold growing in there!

Agree. What is your moisture source? It obviously saturated the beads beyond their capacity. And you MUST open you coolerdor periodically to let it breathe.

Do not nuke the beads, they will explode when the moisture expands so quickly. Place them on a cookie sheet and pick out the ones that have visible mold on them. Dry the remaining beads in a regular oven at 185 degrees until all of the remaining beads are white. This has worked in the past. If you can afford it, replacing them is best.

But as Herfnerd stated you really need to determine the reason it grew in the first place. There needs to be a little air exchange in the cooler, some folks leave the drain plud open and this helps.

Use less water, less often.

Spread beads on a cookie sheet.

Borrow wife's hairdryer and set on highest setting.

Dry beads with hairdryer.

Use vacuum cleaner to pick up beads all over the kitchen.

Get new beads.

Yep. I am sure too much water was a major factor here.

The good news is that there was no mold on the beads themselves. It was only beginning to form on the nylon stocking that holds them.

My cooler does not have a drain so, my solution was to straighten a paper clip and close the lid on top of it. That leaves a small slit of an opening; and since the cooler is in a low traffic area of the house there is not a lot of air flow over it to draw the moisture out of it.

Needless to say, my attention has been drawn and I am going to stay on top of this from now on.
