Ash Tray stand in the Newspaper.

Ashtray stand mixes two styles

BYLINE: John Sewell, Special to The Star

SECTION: CONDO LIVING; Pg. CO08

LENGTH: 629 words

Q: In 1992, I bought this Art Nouveau gentleman's ashtray stand from a shop in Orillia for $10. There was no ashtray with it and I've not yet found one. Do you think it would have been milk glass? It's about 48 centimetres tall. The place where cigars or cigarettes rested is quite dirty and I'm afraid to clean it, since I suspect only sandpaper would remove the blackish marks.

Betty, Toronto

A: While smoking has certainly fallen from fashion, tobacco-related items like this have remained popular with collectors. If anything, interest has increased. This ashtray stand, which will be North American-made - possibly even Canadian - is particularly nice with its art deco/Art Nouveau design. I've seen this ashtray before and it was stamped on the underside of the foot with the words "National Picture." The use of nudes was prevalent in the 1920s when this was made, and this woman's pose is also very art deco. The way her legs flow into the base is more characteristic of Art Nouveau though, so the style here is a real mix. The missing ashtray wouldn't have been milk glass; it was a dark amber glass. The stand itself is copper-plated cast iron and the two prongs at the top are what's left of the compartment that once stored a box of matches. As for cleaning, I'd restrict your tools to a soft toothbrush and mild dish soap. Skip the sandpaper, which will only mar the finish. Your $10 buy is worth about $125 as is. If it were complete, it might be worth $250.

This sounds like a nice looking ashtray. Is a picture available?

Every time I'm in an antique/collectables store, I check for smokestands.

I usually can't believe the prices they are asking for worn out, rusty, parts-missing pieces of junk.

Of course, it makes my three very nice smokestands worth a lot more.
