Rye Whiskey, rye whiskey, rye whiskey I cried.

Had some rye whiskey at The Camp one year--maybe Ancient Age (?-really liked it)--but have been wanting to try one lately.

Saw Sazerac for $20.00. Always partial to Wild Turkey in my days as a professional drinker, so I've thought about their rye.

Want to try it again, but can not find in anything less than a 5th. Therefor, I don't want to spend too much money on something I might find that I don't like.

Any thoughts/suggestions?

Many Thanks.

Sazerac's good. Jim Beam makes one that is drinkable. Old Overholt isn't my favorite and I haven't tried Ri yet. The best is the Handy Sazerac, and it is superlative. It's $60 a bottle.

I remember that bottle of rye, although not who made it. I pretty much crawled inside that bottle that night.

Before Prohibition, rye was the most popular whiskey in America. Now there are only a very few distilleries that make it. Seems a decade of exposure to Canadian whiskey changed folks' preferences.

Also, rye is getting a lot of attention in beer homebrew circles.

The wild turkey ain't bad, but I prefer bourbon to rye. Can't splain it but it is what I prefer.

I think flip or jb had that rye, but flip would have had the Laphroig. If I remember, it was not an overly expensive brand, but, to me, good over ice with water on the side.

I drank so much cheap bourbon in my professional days that I have burned out on it, but the rye was good.

The attention in homebrew circles? As in small batch ryes, or something a lot of the beer guys are also drinking?

I think it was jb. Flip would have had the Scotch or Black Bush.

But even that may be changing now that some Canadian distillers/companies are rediscovering the allure of a good rye... witness Wiser's recently launched Legacy release (not to mention the exclusive Red Letter bottling that preceeded it).

Browsed the rye shelf at the liquor store and found Russel's Reserve Rye. I think that is what jb brought to the Camp. It's pretty good if you can find it.

I have been drinking a few ryes off and on for a few years now. I really like the Wild Turkey rye for a daily drink. The Turkey is at a good price also ($20) For a treat I will get Rip Van Winkle 13yr old Rye if I can find it. I haven't found a bottle in a few years. Its usually in the $60.00 range. It is one of the smoothest ryes I have ever had.

I have also tried Jim Beams, Old Overholdt and Russels Reserve.

If you like the Van Winkle, Greg, you need to find some Handy Sazerac. 18 years old and smooth as silk. Made by the same distillery (probably replaced it in the product line).
