My wife and I are a huge fans of 78s. We are slowly converting the ones we have to digital but there are some amazing things that have not been handed down from the past. It's a window to a different time.

Do not part with anything on the OKEH or Vocalion label. They're worth money.

I have a ton of 78s that I inherited and a few that I bought. I pick them up whenever I see them if the music looks interesting. I really like listening to them if I have the time. You can hear some stuff that never made it to CDs or digital, or even LPs.

I've got a crappy little turntable that plays 78s, so they sound like crap on it, but I think you can get decent sound out of them with the right gear. Really need a 78 specific needle, which is much fatter than the needle used on LPs. RIAA curves have changed a lot over the years, too, so an adjustable phono pre-amp would be nice. Just another project waiting on my time and money...

careful with those 78s

if they're made from acetate, normal vinyl cleaning solutions will destroy them

also, they wear much much faster than traditional vinyl, you'd be lucky to get 50 plays out of them

Get them transferred to high quality reel-to-reel tape and don't play them again so you can preserve them. Then you can make a digital copy of the tape if you want so you can listen to them without degrading the tape or record. Yes it seems like overkill but those things can't be replaced.
