Oh lord. What you wanna know. These days he rests on his laurels (sp) IMHO. However back when he was backing the likes of Sonny Boy Williamson II he was VERY influential. He does not play like the standard blues guys, more complicated chord variations. Loved to play the 9th chords & brokern chords and slide them around. I consider Robert Lockwood (who I have had the pleasure of meeting) THE best living blues guitar player PERIOD and one of the top 5 ever to play the damn guitar. He was way ahead of others. Obviously you know he's Robert Johnson's step son, but he's tired of hearing that. I have seen him be absolutely fabulous, as good as it gets and I have seen him go through the motions more than once. THE CD to own is 'Steady Rollin Man'. Lockwood is in a class by himself, but he's old and very cranky at times. If you need to more or need a sample of his stuff just lemme know. I guess you can tell I am a fan but his recent work does not do him justice. Helluva player in his prime but more with broken chords than single string solos.

Excellent info. Thanx mannish. I came across the name and wanted to know if he was worth looking into. Apparantly he is. And I will definitely look especially for the CD you mentioned. Thats kinda why I asked. I picked up a couple "Gatemouth" Brown CD's, based on name/popularity alone, and I just couldn't get into it. I can't afford to make that mistake again, for the time being. Thanx again!!

I change my mind Lockwood is in the top 10 not the top 5. Gatemouth plays so many styles and IMHO his vocals sounds strained it makes him hard to listen to. I have seen him and he is an extraordinary talent. If you are expecting Lockwood to 'wail' on the guitar you will be disappointed. I been listening to SBW II this morning and Lockwoods playing in the background is incredible. He doesn't play many solos but he plays some real nice runs, his chording just nails me. He's a jazzy kind of blues player. Gatemouth Swings is a terrible CD. I do get tired of Lockwood doing the tune 'Kind Hearted Woman' on every CD.
If your address is in your profile I can make you a Lockwood CD from various CDs so you can get an idea. I have an Otis Spann (blues piano king)& Lockwoowd CD that is good.

Don't leave out Johnny Shines if you like acoustic/delta blues. 'Back To The Country' was his last one and Snooky Pryor plays harp
with Johnny Nicholas playing some guitar. Shines didn't play much guitar at this timne due to his stroke but his vocals are real strong. Anyway the CD is definte 10.
