Why not leave the sides unshaped when you cut the box open, and then clamp the top and bottom together while you shape the ends? This would give you a perfect gap where the curved sides meet, but it might be tricky getting it to stay together (maybe screw it together where the hinges and lock will go from underneath so that the holes or plugs are not seen later?). You could also band-saw it in half since most band saw blades have a much narrower kerf than a table saw - provided you have a big enough band saw and good ripping guide, of course.

If you are making the box as a humidor, then just about any wood will work as long as you put spanish cedar or honduran mahogany inside. If you are making it as a storage box to use inside a humidor, or as a more acurate reproduction, then it should probably be made from solid spanish cedar or lighter-colored mahogany.

The original finish will be tough to duplicate as varnish (or is it shellac?) darkens considerably with age.
