I wasn't heading, Aaron. I was resisting.

Look, as James says, all burr grinders are not created equal. Good, low-speed burr grinders are not CHEAP, at least as far as I know, but getting one would be a good investment nonetheless. I've been using my Solis Maestro Plus (which I got for about $130) for close to 5 years now. I don't regret the expense one bit.

Nor did I pitch my blade grinder - it's great for whole spices.

DAMN! Tonight I was roasting the last of my regular coffee (got plenty of decaf left). The first batch went off great, but the last 2 I got distracted each time and ended up roasting one for about 20 minutes and the other for about 30 minutes. Needless to say they're wasted at this point. I have about 2 pots of regular left, but I'm going to have to buy some more pretty soon since I just burned the shit out of the ones I had left.

If that was the case I would have been done with 10 minutes to spare.

Anyone have experience with hand cranked burr grinders/coffee mills? I have a plate grain grinder that works ok for grain and was always interested in a manual coffee mill, just never bought one.

Dang man, did your beans catch on fire?

Grain mills are designed to turn wheat into flour. I don't know how coarse you can make them go, but I kind of think that wouldn't work for anything but espresso or Turkish coffee.

I've heard good things about Zassenhaus hand coffee grinders. the only negative being that they're rather a lot of work. They supposedly work very well, though.

I've certainly turned beans into charcoal before - 45 minutes in an Original Poppery will do that. Don't know if flames were involved or not, as I (obviously) wasn't watching the roast.

The folks over at coffeegeek.com rave about the remanufactured vintage hand mills at Orphan Espresso. They're around $70 and according to the folks who bought them, if Orphan says they'll grind for espresso, they'll work like a charm. Plus they're vintage and some are quite cool looking.
Here's the link:

I'm too lazy myself.
