Buena Vista Social Club

I caught a documentary on the group a couple nights ago on Showtime. I had heard some of their music a few years back and liked it then. After watching the documentary I gained a ton of respect for them. It was also a great insight into the sheltered nature of so much of the world. Their reactions when walking around New York City were great. So many things we take for granted were so fresh and exciting for them. Awesome documentary. Highly recommend watching it if you like the Afro-Cuban Jazz music they play.

Love the movie and the music. Have the album and the video. I want to get it on DVD, though. Good music to smoke to!

Concur, I saw them do an outdoor concert in London a few years back and it was brilliant. They practically carried Reuben Gonzalez out to his piano due to his advanced arthritis, but you'd never have known it by his virtuoso playing.

I got a chance to see Omara Portuondo in Chicago and was VERY lucky to get to see the recently departed Ibrahim Ferrer twice in concert and once on the street in Havana.

Along the same lines, I also ran into Chuchó Valdes and his lovely family walking along the Rio Almendares near the house I was staying in for a few days.

Saw Bebo perform in the village a couple of weeks ago. He's still got it.

He did The Peanut Vendor as an encore...
