Observations: College FB opening week

Notre Dame and "former genius" Charlie Weis are thankful the service academies, Stanford and Duke are on the schedule this year so they can have 4 or maybe 5 wins.

Lloyd Carr stayed one year too long at Ann Arbor. (Some Michigan fans think he's stayed at least five years too long.)

Over the next five years, Appalachian State has contracts to go to LSU, Florida and Georgia. (Note to App St: Thanks to Michigan, ALL of them will take you very serious. You won't sneak up on them or anyone else ever again.)

Tim Tebow was impressive his first start at quarterback for Florida against that powerhouse Western Kentucky. But before anointing him as the next Elway, let's see how he does against good teams when everyone knows he has to throw the ball, he has to go through his progressions and has a weak side safety blitz coming.

Bobby Bowden cleaned house of his coaching staff at FSU last winter and hired a bunch of new people. But it doesn't look like he hired the BEST people to work with the less than stellar talented players.

Va Tech had their emotional game at Blacksburg but didn't look very sharp. They play like that this Saturday at LSU and they'll get their butts ground up for use in levee reconstruction.

Attention Oklahoma State! You are NOT big time yet. Back to the drawing and recruiting boards before you try to compete with the big boys.

Ga Tech's defense is very, very good. Enjoy it this year, because DC Jon Tenuta will be walking the sidelines somewhere else next year as a head coach.

Tennessee's season is basically over and it's only the first week of September. If they don't rebound strongly and quickly, Phil Fulmer can start updating his resume. (PS to Phat Phil: You've got Florida in less than two weeks but if you look past Southern Miss you'll be 0-2 going into Gainesville.)

Is Texas a paper tiger? Will Colt McCoy suffer the sophomore jinx? If their effort against Arkansas State is any indication of things to come, the answers are yes and yes. TCU (Longhorns next opponent) has to be licking their chops after watching the game film.

Is Auburn not as good as their ranking or is Kansas State better than people give them credit for? A very good South Florida team comes to Auburn this week and we'll have a better gauge.

Maybe Tom O'Brien should have stayed at Boston College instead of heading to NC State.

Hey Virginia: Stick to lacrosse and soccer. You're good at that.

I don't care who the competition is. Darren McFadden of Arkansas is the best and most exciting player in college football.
