Keep in mind that as it froze, the alcohol in the water may have kept the frozen mixture from forming the proper crystal lattices and expanding to the point that it would break the bottles. I dunno.
I figure that it could have been frozen into the ice without breaking them, as the pressure inward on the glass walls would have been supported by the round glass, but if it froze inside, I think it could almost certainly cracked the glass, in spite of the fact that the ice surrounding it should have kept it stable. I'm having a hard time figuring on this one. There would have been a lot of different pressures on that over the years, but I think that the most important questions would be Does that alcohol mixture expand when it freezes the shape of the bottle what it was like when the water started to invade the storage and freeze. Did the bottles freeze first, or were they encapsulated in ice before they froze? I love questions like this. I think I'm going to freeze a couple of bottles this weekend to see. |
