Well, as I'll be phasing out of my numetal obsession in a couple days, I've been meaning to pick up some bluegrass. Don't own any, and don't know a lot, but I love upbeat instrumental bluegrass when I hear it, and want to buy a cd or 4...so, give me some recommendations!

I strongly recommend The Del McCoury Band, IMHO the best BG band going. If you like Steve Earle and his great writing check out 'The Mountian" awesome CD with the Del McCoury Band backing up Earle. Some good writing. If you can tolerate Ricky Scaggs vocals (I like him a lot) I think the Kentucky Thunder CD "Bluegrass Rules" is great. I am no an expert but the Del McCoury band sweeps the BG awards, from what I have read. I seen 'em a bunch of times and they are incredible good. No guitar picking to speak of but tremendous mandolin, banjop, fiddle. They even cover Robert Cray's
"Smokin Gun" with a BG slant

There's a great Bluegrass "primer" available at Columbia House called "Preachin', Prayin', Singin'."

Also, e-mail me your address; I'll send you a tape of Killbilly. No longer around, or in print, but fabulous stuff.

I strongly recommend a guy named Dan Crary. Absolutely incredible guitar player. Also, take jefslat up on his offer. He sent me a tape of Killbilly and that is some crazy music! I never thought you could rock-out to bluegrass!

For a different take, try Nickel Creek.

These are kids out of the San Diego area. Their parents took them to bluegrass festivals most of their lives, and they have all won different bluegrass competitions as children. They have SOME Nashville polish, but they CAN PLAY. I just bought their CD this week and I'm loving it.

Who tagged BigO's wiener?
