Is $149 for an antique maushaum pipe good?
Original case, oversized, intricate carving of a man with a lot beard. Really cool looking

Maybe, maybe not. A pic or a link would help. Carving quality is a key factor.
Branding has something to do with price too. Is it English with hallmarked silver that can be dated? There are a lot of factors. Is it clean and smokeable? What else do you know? Does the pipe just grab you? $150 is not out of line for a high quality antique carved meerschaum. Last edited by xrundog; 07-31-2014 at 05:44 PM. |

The detail is amazing and it is an oversized pipe, with his head having a long, flowing beard. It looks to be in mint condition and the case as well. It is in a display at a local antique dealer. I didn't see any silver on it.
I went on ebay as a comparison and they seem to range in price from $30 to $180. But having your input makes me want to go back and look at it closer. I don't collect pipes (though I have about 15 that my dad had, but nothing special). So I don't really have a need, but it was just that stinking cool looking.

Stem material is an important indicator too. An antique Meerschaum should have an amber stem. Maybe cherry Bakelite. If you think the carving detail is on par with the very best you've seen pictures of, and it's large and not at all or barely used, plus it has a case, then $150 is a damn good price. It's worth double that. And I might be low in that estimate.

maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to me that the first thing to look at is the artistic quality, as there have been millions of them put out by third world dumps. A good one will not look like it was carved as one of a thousand by a guy who doesn't give a damn.
