The beads absolutely had nothing to do with development of any tastes. Your credo with PG solutions is much more likely to cause that problem if you happen to get any of it on your smokes. You can also dry those too wet beads in the oven at low temperature. Don't worry about the cracking, it only gives the media more surface area and actually improves their efficiency...
