Cancer?
Another thread about second-hand smoke got me thinking. We all know, and can name, cigarette smokers who have died from cancer or heart disease. We also have heard that cigar smokers have an increased risk of mouth/tongue/lip cancer. So I wondered, does anyone on this board personally know any cigar smokers who have had mouth cancer of any kind? I don't. How about you all?

I don't know anyone, but I suspect that cigar smoking may, slightly, increase one's risk for cancer...dooesn't mean one will get it, however.
My father died at 90 -- he smoked two packs of Pall Mall daily until he was into his late 70s

The only thing that I have ever known about was a handful of people who had oral cancer from chew, and most of them wound up having half of their skulls removed. Some of them were VERY young, but had real big habits. Chew, especially snuff, IMO, is some pretty nasty stuff, that is far worse than any other form of tobacco. Just my observations.
My mother in law, on the other hand, had ill fitting dentures, and she NEVER replaced them or had them refitted. That left her with chronic infections and inflamations, that according to all of her medical staff, triggered and/or encouraged bone cancer that ate the entire area of her face that the infections had plagued for probably a decade or longer. Poorly fitting dentures cause cancer. Spread the word. |

Anything that damages cells in your body can cause cancer. That being said, I believe there are people that are born predisposed to catching certain diseases. If you have a high rate of heart disease in your family chances are there is a genetic code somewhere in your DNA that makes you susceptible to the same disease. Can smoking cigars increase your risk of contracting a cardio vascular disease of one type or another? YUP. Can eating a Big Mac a coupla times a week cause your arteries to clog up so bad your blood backs up into your heart and makes you vapor lock? YUP. Do I have the right to make the choice...........Uh.....wait a minute........what was the topic again? Oh yeah. No I don't know anybody who has developed cancer or heart disease that was directly related to cigar smoking. I did however know a guy that was in his late 30's and in the best shape of his life. Mountain biking, jogging and eating a strict low cholesterol diet didn't prevent him from having a massive coronary while playing basketball with his 13 yr old son. He never smoked a day in his life.

General Grant died of I believe throat cancer - of course he smoked 20+ cigars a day and boozed it up. Of course I didn't know him. What I've read is that drinking bourbon/scotch and smoking radicaly increases your chances of cancer. Smoking cigars alone is a slight increased chance, but you have to smoke a few a day.

Here is the logic of the smoke Nazis:
Some people smoke. Some of those people have cancer. Smoking causes cancer. ... then they create "facts" to back it up. Using that logic you could make the case that clipping your toenails causes cancer. ... or that man causes global warming
