Caramel additives in Scottish whiskies?

I heard that even the high-priced, eminently respectable whisky houses add caramel to their spirits because there "aren't enough oak barrels to go around" or they don't get aged in the barrels long enough to impart that color naturally. My understanding is that distillation leaves all spirits clear/colorless, and any chromatic tinge is just affectation. Anybody know if this is the common practice I've been led to believe it is? Wouldn't caramel (being what it is) affect the natural flavoring? Or is this PART of the flavor, built in to the process?
