help with new lotus lighter
my loving wife got me a engraved lotus L1500 as a fathers day gift from my 7 yr old. Well I can't get it to work, it sparks but I don't hear any fuel coming out. I'm hoping that some other folks might have an idea what it might be, I'd hate to have to return it, I think it would break her heart.

Lots of things it could be, old gabe. First, we'll need to know a few things. Did you fill the lighter or was it filled at the store your wife bought it? What type of fuel was used? Did it ever light, i.e., at the store? Do you know how to adjust it?
If these questions are insulting your intelligence, good. It means you know how to service and maintain a torch lighter. (Hey, you never know how knowledgeable another is.) If you're interested in fixing it yourself, rather than returning it, here's a good thread to read: http://forums.cigarweekly.com/showthread.php?t=33433 Good luck.

Not offended at all, It was shipped empty, however the wife filled it with a cheap butane before she gave it to me. I've ordered some good stuff. I own a cheap tiger which seems to work fine with the cheap stuff and I have a little experanice with adjusting that one so I think I've done it correctly. This one has never lite and was ordered on-line. The book that came with it has a short trouble shooting section, with symptoms and solutions, for this symptom it states make sure there is fuel, if not then send back. I will go through the thread provided thank you. And I now just noticed the sticky which when I did a search on lotus never came up which I will use as an excuse for not seeing it. Thanks

Oldgabe, I'm not sure what cheap fuel you used, but I'd drain/purge it through the fueling valve before trying to light the lighter again. Depress the valve with a punch, awl, small screwdriver (anything except a ball point pen) until the hissing stops. Wait a couple minutes and do it again. You may have to do it a few times until all the old fuel is purged.
Hopefully your new fuel is one of the triple, quadruple or quintuple refined ones. Vector, Lava and King seem to be the fuels of choice for torch lighters. Again, good luck with your new lighter.

One more thing.
After refueling, try to adjust the lighter with the with the adjustment "screw" that surrounds the valve before you take the lighter apart as described in the thread I posted. I wouldn't take the lighter apart until all other options have failed.

Ok well I sat down with the “I fixed my lighters” thread, a jewelers screwdriver and the hope of a kid on Christmas eve. Once I pulled the cover off the first thing I noticed was a tube not connected to anything I thought maybe a breather tube. Well I followed it down to the gas chamber and realized that unconnected tube is why I was getting no gas to the spark, and oh BTW explained the very scary symptom I had the other night. After pushing the button several times and listening and was able to hear the gas coming out a little I then hit the button again and created a spark well the area around the button filled with flame. So basically the inside of the lighter was filling up with gas, MAN I’m lucky I didn’t loose a hand. Well after several attempts with fat shaky hands I got the hose reconnected. And now the lighter works. Man I’m so glade, the wife and son got to see me light up one of my favorite weekend cigars (Olivia V) in the middle of the week. The smiles they had and how proud my son was that he gave me a good gift…..Interesting how as you get older those small moments pop up in the oddest places and times.

I was going to suggest that you take it apart and I've actually seen lighters ( mine ) where the tube came off and that sound you heard was the escaping gas. I have about 25 different lighters and about 3 of them had this same issue. Good work there in getting it taken care of and enjoy that lighter now! ( Had to fix one of mine that went thru the washing machine...guess I need to check before I put my pants in the hamper...took me 10 minutes to take apart,,fix and then use again. )

I have had to play around with my lotus before. The little sparker was not sending the shock to where the butane was coming out but rather it was shorting out on the casing. I just took some very small pliers to it and bent it closer to the burner where it easily sparks!
Try going into a dark room and (holding the lighter at arms length) to see where the spark is going. It should be hitting the top of the burner.
