Recently tasted "WOW" whiskies

And they're all Scotches, too...

Glenlivet 21 Year Old Archive / 43%ABV
This distillery seems to be on something of a roll of late. From the deceptively complex can-be-found-everywhere 12 Year Old through the vibrant 16 Year Old Nadurra Cask Strength to the delectable 18 Year Old, each and every example seems to hit its market niche perfectly. And the 21 Year Old just has to be the dessert whisky par-excellence, with its sumptuous sweetness gliding across the palate. A tad on the expensive side, yes. But the quality speaks for itself.

Compass Box Oak Cross / 43%ABV
A blended malt. Perhaps the easiest drinking malt whisky I've imbibed this past year. Yet that very calm palate presence still manages to pack a series of enlivening mini-malt-spice moments... Just enough to keep things exciting. I can't imagine anyone not liking this one.

Compass Box The Spice Tree / 46%ABV
Another blended malt created by John Glazer and his team. And a fantastic pour it is, too. Take some excellently matured Clynelish as the core of the blend, add further maturation in casks recapped with well-toasted European oak ends, and voila! Worth every single penny, especially if you're partial to Highland whiskies.

Isle of Jura Prophecy / 46%ABV
I'll admit. The standard 10 Year Old Jura never really did much for me. And I've always felt that the Superstition teeters on the edge of weirdness. But this bottling hits the target bang-on. Just enough quality Sherry influence to bring spiciness along with rich sweetness, counterbalanced by lovely surges of peat and touches of coastal saltiness. It's all here. For anyone seeking that happy medium between Highland and Islay characteristics, Prophecy is definitely worth a try.

Ardbeg Corryvreckan / 57.1%ABV
I've saved the best for last... at least for those of you who LOVE their peat. This one's simply a monster of a malt, what with that inimitable Ardbeg citrus-tinged bittersweetness (perhaps even sweeter here than is the distillery norm) taking an elevator ride to each ascending floor of peat. The sheer intensity of aroma and flavour is spellbinding. Do I like it better than the Uigeadail? Well, that's a hard call. But then, these two whiskies do count amongst the very finest heavily smoked ones currently available. Yes, they're quite expensive. Don't let that fact stop you.
