Jameson Black Barrel

Bought a bottle some time ago at an Irish whiskey tasting. I finally opened it. Here's the description from a review:

Jameson Black Barrel is a whiskey comprised of (a high proportion of) single pot still and grain whiskey aged first in a mix of ex-sherry and ex-bourbon. The whiskey is then aged in extra charred ex-bourbon barrels, hence the name. The age of the whiskey ranges from 8-16 years of age.

My take, it's a wonderfully complex yet balanced blend of subtle fruit and smokey nuances that goes down smooth, decent price too.

I'm mad as hell, personally. The first that I had was a pint in a three part package and it was the most wonderful whisky that I have ever had. Then, last year I bought another bottle. Dull, unremarkable. Nothing like the first black barrel. No nuances and nothing from the sherry. Not really any bourbon barrel, either. $60? Yes, I'm mad as hell.

I'm truly glad that you got a good lot, because the first experience was like your first ride in a corvette.

This is the same reason I have for never buying anything over $3 or so in tobacco. I bought a box of upmann golden nicaragua, and jesus. Those things were spongey an useless. I can't stand the heartache.

Based on the description, it seems to me that if QC isn't closely monitored, a variation in the amounts and ages of the different components could result in significant differences in the finished product.

I've had it a couple of times. I prefer Black Bush, myself.

I don’t know if it is still true, but it used to be Jameson was only drank by Catholics and Black Bush by Protestants. I like both.

Yep! The old religious divide seems to have faded into the mists of time.

I can remember being in Fitz's Blarney Stone, a popular local Irish watering hole, over forty years ago, and hearing the proprietor, Patrick Fitzgerald, tell someone who had ordered a Bushmill's: "We don't serve that Londonderry shit in this establishment. We serve Jameson, Powers, and Tullamore Dew."

Hardly seems relevant these days given the 'international ownership' nature of the drinks industry (Jameson being owned by Pernod Ricard and Bushmills by Jose Cuervo).
