anyone tried gas??

I have a buddy of mine that swears that sealed, stainless steel boxes filled with argon gas are THE WAY to store and age valuable smokies.
Anyone heard of this??

ahhh

Wouldn't argon slow down the oxidation process essential to aging cigars?

Wouldn't stainless steel impart a metallic taste to the cigars?(rhetorical)
If it were THE WAY to store stogies, all our humidors would be lined with stainless steel instead of cedar or mahogany.
As for the argon...?

People say I always seem to have gas!

Seriously, argon is an inert gas. That seems to be contrary to the concept of aging which is the subtle interaction of the tobacco, the spanish cedar and the oxygen and other gases in the humidified air.

Now, I'm no expert in, well, stainless steel and argon gas cigar storage systems, I guess would be the field, but it sounds like that would be good for preserving smokes more or less exactly as they are, as it would stall for the most part the chemical reactions which cause the flavors to change over time. So if you had, say, some already aged cigars that taste fantastic, you could throw them in your hermetically sealed, argon-filled Sams-club cooler and they'd taste the same in twenty years. But if you're looking to put a little age on those connies to draw out the subtleties they're so famous for, I think you might want to skip the argon.
