A brand new A Rich Pour column for Scotch enthusiasts...
Now, another in the A Rich Pour series of articles that will be of particular interest to fans of wine cask matured single malt Scotches...
Quote: Lifestyles A Rich Pour – No. 17: Wine Casks at Work in the Land of Scotch Monday March 9th, 2009 Doug Kuebler (jazznut) The concept of placing distilled whisky into a used wine cask may seem slightly incongruous at first. Why not simply allow wood alone to have its say in enhancing flavour while the spirit slumbers and mellows down through the years? As anyone who has experienced single malts from Aberlour and Macallan (to name but two Highland sites renowned for Sherry cask maturation) or some of the increasingly prevalent special editions from other distilleries knows, though, wine casks seem to be practically everywhere in Scotland these days. Yet this phenomenon is not entirely new. As always, I hope you enjoy the read!

Why is it that every time I finish reading one of Doug's articles I have this overwhelming urge to head to the liquor store?
Great article Doug!

Damn you, Doug!
What are the first two things I see in the Near Miss section? Arran Amarone Cask - I still have a little airline-size bottle of it you gave me from my visit to Montreal Balvenie '93 PortWood - the bottle I purchased at the big SAQ in Montreal that you helped me pick!!! |

Thanks for having a look-see, fellows.
Dan, please don't feel too bad about those two. The very fact they made it into the article's choices indicates undeniable quality. And my rating categories are in the piece are quite harsh. The Arran possesses an excellent degree of complexity, while the Balvenie displays an immediate attractiveness as well as being a fine value. Heck, I've gone through a couple of bottles of the 1993 Balvenie myself. But getting to know a single malt 'from the inside out' (i.e assessing it critically over a period of time) does tend to reveal certain subtle shortcomings, especially when one is able to reference those to the attributes of other bottlings.

I'm just giving you hell, Doug
How could I be mad after those pours of Brora, AH Hirsch, and Yoichi I had at your place? |

The remnants of the Yoichi are now 'slim' indeed, Dan, and that Brora is but a 'distant memory'.
