Today's purchases...

I ventured downtown Saturday afternoon in search of the 2006 vintage of The Stump Jump from the d'Arenberg winery in Australia, and managed to grab some bottles before they all disappeared from the shelves.

Seems as though I wasn't alone in my plans.

Of course, I had to saunter over to the liquor section, purely for curiosity's sake, you understand.

Bingo! Not only had a shipment of Elijah Craig 12YO arrived. But I also came upon Nikka Taketsuru 12YO Pure Malt. Good to finally see a Japanese whisky!

Will let you know how it goes down.

Nice grab. I've heard good things about the d'Arenberg, but I don't think I've had the Stump Jump before. We've had the Dead Arm before, perhaps the Footbolt. D'Arenberg do make some good stuff.

Do those Japanese make a good whiskey?

This will be only my second one, the first being Nikka's very, very tasty Yoichi 10 Year Old Single Malt. Judging by the number of awards Suntory and Nikka have been garnering over the last few years, however, the answer to your question would have to be an unequivocal, "YES!"

Nice. Maybe one day I'll overcome my prejudices and give one a shot.

Sounds interesting. (Montreal has some of the best liquor stores I've ever been in, a bit jealous here in carolina.)

I'm sure our state run run stores wont have anything like that, but I'll be interested to hear about it.

Pretty fair price too ($64CDN), as far as I can see, when compared to what it's going for in Europe (around 40 odd Euros).

The Stump Jump is a Grenachr, Shiraz and Mourvedre blend that is very fruit foward and fresh tasting. I was able to get these at $8 US a bottle at Winelibrary.

IMO this is a red that would go great with barbecue. It actually can take a bit of a chill without ruining it so IMO this is a really good summer time red.

I broached the first bottle a couple of nights ago, and have to agree 100% John... Sweet flavour onset almost to the point of jamminess. But a spicy backdrop and a nice balancing acidity kicked in just in time to 'rescue' matters, and the wine improved appreciably in the glass.

Doug, what do you think of the Elijah Craig 12YO? I am a big fan of this Bourbon.
