Bonnie Raitt.....a "sellout?"

I was listening to some Bonnie Raitt on my way in to work this morning and got to thinking about some subjects brought up in here lately...

Bonnie Raitt played the circuit for years in relative obscurity, then all of a sudden was "discovered" by the masses with the release of "Nick of Time".
Is this due to Raitt "selling out" and playing watered down "mainstream" blues, or did the public's taste gradually change and finally enabled to appreciate her talent?

.....or perhaps just a case of the heavens being in the right allignment?

Same thing happened to Metallica. Hardcore speed metal fans until the "Black" album was released then BOOM. They were accused of selling out with that album, too.

She changed her music to pop - Nick Of Time was defintely a pop recording & Bonnie doesn't play the kinda music she did when she was obscure.

Lots of people benefited from her popularity: Charles Brown was bascially reitred until Bonnie put him on tour opening for her, he said it gave him a hole new audience. He said he would get standing ovations and got anohter recording contract - sold lots more records he blamed it ALL on Bonnie. I was with Charles on his 70th B'day - Bonnie sent him a bunch of roses, he said she never forgets his b'day.

I played the Jerry McCain benefit (he was sick & he wife had cancer) Bonnie did not make it however she sent a large check.

She supports the Alabama Blues Project (doing that fest in Mobile)

She has apparently has a thing for B'days she sent someone else I know a home computer for his b'day.

That is a few I know of- so there is lots of good stuff she has done however had she not got out of obscurity she could not have helped all those folks.

I have never met her but we have mutual friends & everyone of them says she has heart of gold.

Funny you bring her up: I am currently using a 'borrowed' Bonnie Raitt model Stratocaster just to play something different.

She has leaned more toward pop but still plays some music that I enjoy; just less consistently.
