Newbie Storage Question

I have been buying cigars individually because I don't have a humidor and don't know how to properly humidify cigars. How here's the question. I am going to buy a box or two of cigars to take to college with me in the fall. I won't have a humidor unless I go and buy a cheap one. Is there any way to keep cigars from drying out without putting them in a humidor? Is just leaving them in the box in the cello good enough to last for a semester or so?
