Most influential band of all time
you know, who has everybody tried to sound like, in the 80s, 90s, today?
I know you prolly won't believe me, but I vote for Robert Fripp and King Crimson. |

Interesting choice, and interesting topic. I find it impossible to name only one.
For the late 70s punk movement, it would have to be the Ramones. Early 80s glam, Roxy Music. Thrash/speed metal, Motorhead. Pop/mainstream, probably the Beatles. Country, Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, with a nod to George Jones. Bluegrass, Bill Monroe.

Jeff, have you noticed that kids today have about 5 categories to describe their music that doesn't include your categories - well, except for rock as a small subset. Listen to some of it.
Fripp's music has been relevant for 30+ years. You can't say that for Molly Hatchet. |

My vote is Robert Johnson. I shudder to think what the world of music would have been like without him.

This is actually two separate questions... The title of the thread is "most influential" and the post itself asks who everybody tried to sound like in the 80's and 90's.... I think I'll take column A - the most influential!
Chuck Berry - had one of the biggest influences on 60's rock which impacted 70's rock and so on and so on. Just think of his induction in the R&R Hall of Fame. Every artist on that stage jammin with Chuck, playing his style, etc.... Johhny B. Goode could have been one of the most influential songs of all time..... |

I agree 100% with alfa about Fripp/King Crimson.
But I have to point out (and I am biasaed here - see my sig) that Professor Longhair made what many consider the first Rock & Roll record in 1949. All the piano rockers from the 50's on, from Fats Domino to Jerry Lee Lewis etc., were just playing variations on Fess. A lot of Fats' stuff was directly ripped off from Fess.

Most influential:
Punk- Iggy and The Stooges, so many singers just flat out copied Iggy. Heavy Metal- Black Sabbath, there was hard rock before Sabbath, but they were the first heavy metal band and they influenced everybody who came after them. Rap- Sugar Hill Gang, the first group to take Rap to the mainstream. |
