Beads - surface area to depth to container size

Guys, I am making my first foray into using beads - Conservagel specifically.

The hassle is, to maintain a depth of 1 - 1.5" as recommended in the FAQ is requiring a bead container of a size (surface area) that it is really taking up a lot of room in the humidor. Tried splitting it into smaller containers to dsitribute around but am still ending up with a bunch of square inchage devoted to bead containment.

Any suggestions would be welcome....
