Zippo Soft Yellow Flame Butane Gas Insert

Zippo recently put out a new soft flame butane gas insert that fits right into your standard zippo lighter. It is a soft flame so it works great as a pipe lighter.

It uses a traditional flint wheel and flint to ignite the gas. It has a small button that pushes down to release the gas. Once released, it stops the gas flow. There’s no leakage so the gas lasts longer between refills.

It’s not pretty like an Old Boy or a Kiribi but it is built rugged with an all metal housing. It feels solid.

It should be noted, it is manufactured in CHINA and has a 2 year warranty.

The flint wheel is smaller then the normal fluid model. It does strike well and lights the flame well.

The gas flow button is small compared to popular 3rd party models but I had bo problems lighting and keeping the flame lit while lighting my pipe.

The left side is the flint spring screw mechanism. Unscrew and remove to replace with new flints.

The right side is where you refill the butane gas. There is no flame adjustment, but the flame is calibrated so it is a large flame that lights pipes well.

There have been some criticism about the gas button being too small but I had no problems keeping the flame lit.

Nice snug fit into a standard size Zippo lighter housing. I love that there’s no gas leaking so the gas lasts longer between refills.

Good size flame for pipe lighting. Holding the lighter for pipe lighting does take some practice if you are use to using side flame pipe lighters, but you will get use to it quickly.

Price is around $20 plus $3 shipping. Amazon prime is free shipping. It is a high price considering you can get a new standard Zippo fluid lighter for around the same price. But the build quality and soft flame make it great for pipe smokers without breaking the bank.

It’s not wind proof as regular Zippos but it’s ok, about as good as any butane gas lighters when it comes to a light breeze.

It is built well and works great. Highly recommend it as a pipe lighter. If you like the look and feel of your trusty Zippo, add this insert. You also won’t get that lighter fluid taste using this butane lighter.

I've been using this one for several years. It doesn't hold a lot of fuel but I like the side flame much better for lighting a pipe.

I don't think I previously saw this, but did see the inserts recently and picked up a couple. I totally agree with your findings 100%. I wish the button was a little larger, but it's workable. No flame adjustment was a surprise, but again it's workable. Push to activate gas is a much better solution than Vector's mechanical switched solution.

Did some refilling and insert swapping yesterday. My oldest Thunderbird insert, on the left, has failed at the switch and no longer releases gas. It's going back to KMG and hopefully they will replace with the new style insert. New style is in the center next to the Zippo insert on the right.

Thunderbirds are nice because no button to hold and flame can be adjusted.

KMG Vector now has two different Thunderbird pipe inserts. One flint no button and the other piezo ignition with button. I may pick up one of each down the road to try out.

Don't remember seeing the Z-pipe insert previously. Another one to add to my list.

Ultimately, if I don't need something small I'll probably stick with the BIC Ez Reach disposables. At the very least I'll leave one in the car.
