Recovery time for cigars that traveled

Why does it take so long for the recovery time from shipments? Even when they ship with bovedas it doesn't make a difference.

I've traveled 1/2 way around the world with cigars in a travel humid and they smoke as good as when I left the states. But a package from PA to Ohio that lands in 2 days takes 4-6 weeks to recover. LOL.

Well maybe because the latter have been in Ohio and PA?

Shipping is hell on them. Temperature fluctuations alter humidity. As a general rule the larger the ring gauge the longer it takes to equalize the humidity. Larger may be 3 or 4 weeks. Taking the cello off makes it a bit quicker. I'll sometimes throw them in my cooler and take a couple of the cellos off. I'll smoke those first.

It's also a problem when buying out of a shop. They get shipped there and get thrown right on the shelf.

Not sure if this is true or not, but I'd heard that manufacturers, wholesalers and large online retailers tend to store them slightly on the damp side assuming that counteracts the drying effects of shipping. Even a slight increase in ambient moisture in cigars actually increases the effects of the scenarios Tony described well.

I often smoke rott, on the theory that if it's good, it'll only get better. Old Lew from JR once said putting your new boxes to sleep for a month made major improvement in smokability

I always have one OTT, then put the rest away for a month.

Then, try another, and make a judgement.
