Is this statement true?
Recently, I saw what I thought was a beetle in my humi. Turned out it was a little white mite looking thing, origin and purpose unknown. I wrote to my supplier of these smokes, who will remain nameless, to express my concern and here is the reply I got:
"Thank you for your mail. I hope you are well. All the cigars that arrive to the official Habanos SA Importer in Switzerland are frozen, to kill off any possibility of beetles. There are no live beetles in the cigars we receive. The official Importer, as I, simply could not take the risk of infecting our stock (my humidor stores on average 5000 boxes of cigars). You may have found a dead beetle, in which case you can simply throw it away as the cigars are safe as they have been frozen. All the cigars that we buy are from the official Habanos SA Importer in Switzerland, Intertabak. They freeze every cigar they receive from Cuba, precisely in order to kill any chance of a beetle infestation. As you know, it is all cigar smokers or merchants biggest fear, especially when you have a warehouse full of cigars. I believe most of the premium market Habanos SA Importers (Switzerland, UK, Canada, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Honk Kong) freeze all incoming stock. This is a quality control step integrated by Habanos in recent years. I know that the Swiss Importer is required do this, I suppose that the others do too. What makes you think you may have a tobacco beetle ?" So what do you think? Has anyone ever heard this before? |
