New Dunhill Robusto
I was shopping in the Dunhill store in New York and noticed a few new boxes of Dunhill cigars for sale. These aren’t the old “Aged Dunhills” that I’ve seen around for years. Instead of the light blonde wrappers, these had a nice chocolate brown wrapper and they smelled wonderful. Since I was on a vacation of sorts, I decided to splurge on an expensive and untested cigar. If I recall, the robusto size set me back $10+, but I’m not sure since I generally try to block the cost of cigars out of my mind (otherwise, I’d only smoke Backwoods seconds). I immediately left the store and fired the thing up in the park, so my impressions might be tainted a bit by the less than ideal smoking conditions. The cigar was quite oily and felt firmly packed. My first impression was that this cigar burned extremely well. Due to the conditions and my impatience, I lit the cigar like a 12 year-old sneaking one of his dad’s cigars in the back yard. Despite my best attempts to ruin the cigar, it evened itself out and burned straight. As for flavor, it started out with some mild chocolate and spice, building up more of tobacco base about 1/3 of the way in. It also picked up some cedar-y flavor towards the halfway mark. I kept expecting the strength to pick up a notch, but it stayed a nice medium the whole way through. If anything, it reminded me of a cross between an Ashton Cabinet and a Monte Serie V. It never even hinted at getting harsh, though I had to surrender sooner than I might have otherwise due to a light rain shower. Overall, I would say a very well constructed, medium-bodied cigar with balanced flavor. That being said, IMHO it may not be worth the price. I can think of several other, similar cigars that can be found at half this price.
