buy some Propylene Glycol from a pharmacy or chemistry supply store, cut some foam to fit in a soap dish size container or small tupperware, etc. (drill some holes in the lid), then mix the PG 50/50 with distilled water, and soak the foam

Whaddya wanna know? If you got the right kind of Oasis (open cell variety for fresh flowers), you can pour liquid into it and it'll hold a certain amount without leaking. So, pour your PPG into it, put it into an appropriate container (e.g. tupperware with holes poked into the cover) and stick it into your coolerdoor or whatever you're using for a humidor.

You add Distilled water to the PG solution, but I thought
the PG solution was half distilled water so you don't add water to it? I have a few more questions on the foam, I'm using it right now in a cooler... There are some spots on the foam, they were not there before, is the normal for the foam, or is this mold starting to grow ? If it is, I thought mold doesn't grow with PG solution ? Also, Do you just get the foam soaked, or do you keep filling til you have a pool of PG solution in the tupperware bowl/dish ? Right now mine is just soaked with the PG solution. |

DO NOT totally soak the foam with the PG/water solution - just dampen it. If you soak it, there's no room for the water it will need to absorb in order to lower the RH, which is important if you live in a humid area like I do.

Good advice.
I'd suggest heading on over to JR's website and read their "Ultimate cigar storage manifesto". It's well done and covers just about anything you want to know about. http://www.jrcigars.com/index.cfm?pa...orage#homemade I prefer using humidity crystals. They seem much easier to me, but whatever works for you, go for it. xbox, maybe you don't have enough vent holes in your container lid? I like to drill allot of small holes.... so it's ~50% open.

xbox-----it is really just a matter of trial and error.Personally, I do not completely saturate the foam anymore.I did that in the beginning and the humidity was way too high(70%).Just add a certain amount to the foam and put the container in your *dor with a hygrometer.Wait a few days and check the humidity. Adjust from there.

xbox...just want to make sure you are clear on this...
The PG (humidor) solution that you buy from the cigar sites or your local tobacconist are 50% solutions - no need to mix with water before use. They are however grossly overpriced and many opt for a must cheaper alternative which is to buy propylene glycol (from a local pharmacy, etc) and mix it with and equal part of distilled water (to obtain a 50/50 solution). You end up with the same thing as the ready made "humidor" solutions, but at a fourth of the cost or less. I'm sure with all of the recent posts that you understand about how to use this solution with your humidifier (i.e. - using it for the initial charge but only adding distilled water as needed later). I'll be glad to help with any issue or question you have regarding PG solutions and their use. Just let me know. In the meantime, the suggested reading at the JR site is excellent and well worth the time to read.
