I've heard that both ways are OK. I think it may damage the humidor if you saturate it but most people know better.
It won't stain the wood as much as raise the grain, which in turn could damage cigars. I would not rush it, especialy if it's a nice box. You wouldn't want to rush you cigars back to health if they get on the dry side, cause you run the risk of splitting wrappers.It's pretty much the same with wood.
