Why

Here is what I don't understand - The local paper ran a story last week about Illinois going smoke free. In it they quoted a number - "2900 people die each year from second hand smoke"

The way it was written it looks like a fact, not a number quoted from a source. Why hasn't a paper/mass media put out a story about how the numbers for second hand smoke have been so grossly overstated. It's a hot subject and it would be a good read.
