I liked them the most when they first came out...they had a different(unique) sound and you couldn't understand one word that Michael Stipe was singing...

I still listen to Document... but then along came "green." this has some good songs but you can hear a whinny motif that becomes louder and louder with each new release since then.
So much for Artistes.

The turning point, IMO, was "Lifes Rich Pageant." It contains strong elements of what they had been in the past, as well as what they would become. I clearly remember, as side two came to a close, feeling like it was the beginning of the end.
A certain BOTL who shall remain nameless recently dug up a REM bootleg that was recorded at a long-gone club where I used to DJ in my collegiate days. It was great to hear the old songs, performed the old way, but I felt a bit wistful knowing that what created that moment was gone forever.
