Christmas dinner and stuff you do

Predictably prime rib was numerous at Pubix and not so much other stuff that I would consider. It has been dry aging for a few days now to intensify the flavor. So that obviously will be the main. My Mom wants to make 5 cup salad that used to be a standard and it sure beats Waldorf which was another choice.

Not certain about which veg we're gonna do, we got the best they had when we shopped and are not likely to shop again. There will be potatoes and rolls.

Did a lemon pie that needs replacement today as does the mincemeat. The chocolate pecan is lagging a bit due to the age of the eaters and chocolate issues so a more traditional pecan is on the way as well.

It is really a week of cooking and eating for us, not just a day.

They welcome the chief cook and bottle washer during the season.

We have been varying it up the last few years after being an almost exclusively Turkey and Dressing family. Last couple years were prime rib or standing rib roast. This year its a spiral cut ham. Thanksgiving is STILL and always WILL be the traditional Turkey dinner, but for Christmas we are going to move around a bit.

We always do heavy snacks like pigs in a blanket, baked brie, smoked salmon and others.

We save those for New Year's Day. I suppose our holday meals have gotten a bit monotonous, because we always have the same things. But, when you ask them what they want, they answer the same thing each holiday.

Ditto here

Kids: Are we having prime rib and french onion soup for Christmas eve dinner?
Me: Sure, why not...

On christmas Beth makes her cinnabon clones (better, IMHO!) and I make my 5 cheese mac and cheese - 3 pans this year because I've a couple gluten intolerant guests... That was some gigantic bill for cheese!

I'll bet it was! Costco had some good prices on some really good cheese last Friday. I doubt you would want to wade through the place 2 days before Christmas.

K is in chage of stockings every year. She's waited until the last minute and said she was going to Walmart. I told her to think about anywhere but there. There's a good reason I complete my shopping before December starts.

Let's see.
Tomorrow night the kids and the Mrs!!! are coming over here. Mom made a pan of lasagna, and will stew chicken.

Friday at MIL's house, I'm not going, she's sick and my BIL is a Covidiot/Karen with three members of his household in the medical field. Mrs. and my kids will go, and Mrs. will make meatballs and gravy, everyone loves that.

Evening Christmas will be at home with pick food during the Saints' game.

When I was living at home, and everyone was there, Christmas lunch would be a "Your Favorite Dish Meal" It would be small plates, stuff I could fix once I was home from playing Mass. We didn't want it to be overwhelming as we would go to MIL's in the late afternoon and have the large meatballs and gravy menu.
I would bake Oysters Mosca for me, fix an antipasto plate for Mrs. and whatever the boys wanted. But, alas.....one is married and gone and in the last few years had to be at his in-laws very early on Christmas morning. One of us lives away from the house...it was a fun bit while it lasted.

Our tradition on Christmas Eve is a boneless prime rib smoked on the rotisserie smoker. Typically served with twice baked potatoes and some vegetable either corn or greenbeans.

Christmas day this year is not the norm (much like 2020). We are doing heavy finger foods with pies for dessert.

Shrimp cocktail on the Eve. Only time of the year you get all the shrimp you can hold. Cinnamon rolls and sherbet floats in ginger ale for the morning. Main meal between 5 and 6. Cheesesteaks the next day.
