I don't normally purchase French wine, mostly because I don't know how to read the label well enough to know what I'm getting. But last night I decided to take a leap of faith and picked up a bottle of '95 Chateau Lagarde Bordeaux Superiore. I figured a 7-yr old bottle of Bordeaux would go well with my steak and at $8/btl it was tough to resist.
Now, when drinking any red wine, I open the bottle and pour some into the glass and immediately taste it. Initial taste of the Lagarde exhibited lots of bite. That's not unusual for a "fresh" red in my experience. I then let the glass sit for about 10 minutes while I started preparing dinner. After that brief moment, the wine had really opened up and exhibited a very pleasant softness and fruitiness. There were some lovely flavors of blackberries and very few tanins. By the end of the evening, I had nearly nearly killed the whole bottle alone. Official Cigar Weekly Coffee Whackjob |
