Vintage Kirsten Pipes

Recently I received a couple of e-mails asking about Kirsten pipes, and whether one should buy a vintage pipe from a place like Ebay or buy a new one directly from Kirsten.

I owned my first Kirsten before Ebay existed. I bought it new from a pipe shop that carried both Kirsten and Falcon pipes. I bought a couple of extra bowls for it, but soon decided that I didn't like changing bowls all the time, so I bought additional pipes.

IMHO it's a good idea to buy a new Kirsten before you begin trying to rehab vintage Kirstens. I have purchased several Kirstens from Ebay and spent hours cleaning them before I'd even consider putting them into my mouth. Some arrived with bits that had been chewed through, but didn't appear that way in the Ebay photo. Kirsten didn't have bits to replace the destroyed ones, so I either had to have them made, or make a facsimile myself. By the time I completed the rehab with a new bit and shipping, I figured that I could have purchased a new one for about an additional twenty dollars.

I have been fortunate to buy a couple that were in very nice condition, but they still needed hours of cleaning. By buying a new one, you'll see if you really enjoy both the smoking characteristics as well as the aesthetics. I know some folks who won't smoke a Kirsten simply because they don't like the industrial look of a metal pipe. If you decide you like the Kirstens, then it's time to try to pick up a couple of cheapies on Ebay.
