Another gorgeous humidor! I love the grain in it - you just can't find 'new' oak like that anymore.

As for why someone would have nailed it, IMO the majority of 'handy men' of years past were not well-educated about glues and adhesives for repairs such as a box lid. Usually if its wood, people want to bang a nail into for some odd reason, often splitting the wood worse than it may have been before. Even with all of the various glues on the market today, most people would grab a hammer and a nail - a main staple of those handy-man tool outfits that I see at stores everywhere. At least they didn't duct tape it!
