According to the article, CI turned over 60 million in usd (current value vs kronor) in the year of purchase. That is a hell of a lot of revenue turnover. Swedish match is a big and diverse company that followed the phillip morris/kraft model, to diversify into other products and services. They have a lot to offer each other, buying general, now ci, and folding assets and revenue together in a tobacco giant.

This is basically the same reason for JR and altadis to be merged.

So, have there been any really big changes at CI in the past few years that were notable?

Actually, Swedish Match does not own CI anymore. It is owned by ST-Group out of Denmark in the new Joint Venture announced about a year ago and formalized in October. ST-Group owns General cigar. Logista, a division of Altadis, owns JR.

Swedish Match and Scandinavian Tobacco have merged their premium cigar operations. Swedish match owns 49% and Scandinavian tobacco owns 51%. In the deal Swedish Match gave General Cigar, Cigar international, Club Macanudo, factories in the DR(General Cigar Dominicana and El Credito) Honduras(HATSA known as Villazon) as well as their tobacco farms in CT which is probably one of the largest suppliers of CT Shade Tobacco in the world. Scandinavian Tobacco Group gave their CAO group as well as their factories and other cigars that were owned by Scandinavian Tobacco Group and a monetary amount to Swedish Match. The New company is known as ST Group. Swedish Match kept their machine made cigars and smokeless tobacco.
