I would have guessed the German/Bavarian variants would be less likely to be brewed year-round.

The Germans aren't immune to brewing by business decision rather than tradition, and it's not like they're still brewed by monks who want to drink it while fasting during lent. Witness Paulaner-- first they started brewing the Maerzen year-round, then they dumbed down the recipe for their doppelbock to make it into a pale shadow of itself.
Now it seems like more small breweries in the US do things according to Old World traditions.

Gotta admit I don't mind having Optimator available all year. I drinka lot of hoppy beers so a doppelbock makes a really nice malty change of pace.
