Making a smoking room...

Ok I'm about to finish my basement.

Fireplace, Pool Table, Bar, Jukebox, the whole nine yards...

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do If I wanted to smoke down there and not leave too much of an after effect to my room.

You need an exhaust fan. How big is your basement?

I have an exhaust fan to clear the room while I smoke, and an air cleaner (ozone generator) for after I am done. Works pretty well.

probably coming in around 600 square feet or so...

You mean just a big plug in fan pointed at the ceiling?

No, he's talking about a heavy-duty, vent to the outdoors exhaust fan. That's a very good idea, IMO.

If you can't vent to the outside, then look into a big smoke eater. Go here to check out some info and comparisons.

I have a smoking room in my basement and use a Trion CAC 1000 along with a 200 cfm direct vent fan by Panasonic. The Trion is an electrostatic aircleaner used for small commercial applications. It will have no problem cleaning the air for 600 sq ft. Mine works great! Here is a review I found:

Good luck!

Ventilation is your key. Have a fresh air supply (door or window) and an exhaust vent up high with a fan powerful enough to move the smoke towards the vent.

Good luck. Post pics once you get it going.

Your best bet to control smoking odor is direct vent outside. You should size the fan to accomodate your room, and you should consider placing the exhaust duct near your main smoking area.

For example, if your room is 600 ft2 room (with 8' ceiling), your total volume is is 4800 ft3, meaning you need 80 cfm to change the room air in an hour. For bathrooms, it is recommended that you change the air 8x/hr (kitchens 15x). Assuming 8x, this equates to a 640 cfm fan (or 6x at 480 cfm). This does not take into account any resistance from your ductwork.

This is a big fan. Unless you spend big bucks (or have a good remote blower), this could be loud. You may want to investigate a remote blower, and consider locating your exhaust near your proposed main smoking area. You should be able to get away with a smaller fan.

Panasonic has some good discussion on fan sizing:
http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs...tGroupId=25133
They also makes some good/quiet bathroom fans - and they are expensive.

As monkeyboy said, you will need a fresh air supply. There are a number of good threads in this section associated with smoking rooms - use the search engine! Let us know if you have any specific questions & good luck with you project !

I just turned my addition I put on my house into a nice little cigar lounge, bar, giant screen T.V. surround sound, big plush couches and chairs, big ceramic ashtrays, cigar art. Oh yea, and a cabinet and display case humidor. It came out pretty cool. I think I'm gonna go with some kind of outside exhaust. Believe it or not, right now I'm using a couple of scented pillar candles that does do the job.
